Archie and Carmen with the bust of Ignacio Carral
Archie and Carmen with the bust of Ignacio Carral

2019. oil and acrylic on board. (100 x 120cm)

Commissioned by Archie’s father and Carmen’s son-in-law, Cameron Woodrow. He wanted to create a painting which explores the intellectual and political heritage within his family, “ The idea being to capture three generations of similar left-of-centre sensitivity.”

Ignacio Carral, depicted in the stone bust by Emiliano Barral, is Carmen’s father. He was a journalist and poet who notably wrote about workers’ rights in Spain in the 1930s. Carmen Benjamin grew up in the midst of Franco’s violent regime and came to England, studied linguistics and co-wrote Modern Spanish which is the educational standard for Spanish grammar (pictured in the portrait on top of the pile). Archie Woodrow, her grandson, is a member of Momentum with a deep and broad knowledge of left wing politics and ideology.
